In the year 2000, an early version of the beach recovery system was deployed on a coastline experiencing severe erosion. At the time, the shoreline was rapidly retreating due to a combination of wave action, tidal currents, and the absence of natural sediment replenishment.
This pilot installation served as a proof of concept for the use of geotextile-based containment structures designed to redirect wave energy and encourage sediment deposition. Despite limited resources and less advanced materials than those available today, the system showed measurable improvements within months of deployment. Sand began accumulating naturally, tidal forces were moderated, and critical beachfront areas stabilized for the first time in years.
The success of this early deployment laid the foundation for the modern Beach Recovery System. It demonstrated that passive, nature-assisted infrastructure could outperform traditional hard barriers—like seawalls and breakwaters—not only in preserving shoreline integrity but also in restoring natural beach profiles over time.
Today, using enhanced materials such as basalt-infused geotextiles and data-informed design patterns, this system has evolved into a scalable, cost-effective solution for global coastal restoration.
This project is situated just north of the Federal Harbor in Manistee, Michigan, where the Coastal Accretion Engineering System can be seen in the water shortly after installation.
The system successfully halted coastal erosion, and as you can see here, the beach has returne, now providing a natural barrier that protects the Scotland Yard cottages.
This image captures the installation of the system at the Saudi Aramco site, the first step toward restoring the eroded shoreline.
One year after installation in 2000, the Saudi Aramco site showed visible shoreline recovery, with natural sand beginning to return to previously eroded areas.
Here, the newly installed system is visibly functioning as it begins to capture and retain sand along the shoreline.
Two years later, the system has successfully begun restoring the previously lost nearshore beach.
